ARTIST INSPIRATION:  With the picturesque twin islands a mile off shore, Lanikai beach has repeatedly been voted the best beach on Oahu during the last quarter century.  The turquoise waters within the protected lagoon are ideal for swimming year round.  Finest white sand is made from the uhu (parrot fish) chewing on the pristine coral reef.  I learned to hone my craft of painting sand, sea, sky and most of all, sunlight and shadow at Lanikai.  My first one man show was entitled, "Lanikai Perspectives" and was held in Kailua in 1978.  Oil Painting is most suitable for on location work because it resists rain damage.  Fortunately, at this beach you can usually see the dark bottomed cumulus clouds being blown by the trade winds toward you from the deep Prussian blue horizon beyond the reef.  On this fine afternoon there is no rain in sight, in fact it is so clear you can see Molokai.  The clouds must not be piled up against the Pali because the shadows of the palm trees stretch out to the water even though the tide is out.  The pyramid and the sphinx have that timeless quality like our Mokuluas.
