"Punaluu
Black Sand Beach"

ARTIST INSPIRATION: One of the first things I hear from people who see
this image is, "is that the beach that was covered up by a lava flow?"
Actually Punaluu is intact and these people are often thinking about the
Kalapana side of Volcano National Park which is no longer what it used to be.
Punaluu, which in Hawaiian means something about dipping into a spring of water,
has fresh water oozing out of the sand and has a pond adjacent to the
beach. You can see the pond on the right behind the coconut palms.
There is an abundance of large turtles here and the water looks deep due to the
black sand not reflecting. Though black sand is coarse and incredibly hot
when sunny there is an incomparable magic to it. Visible on the horizon
beyond Mauna Loa is that Hawaiian atmospheric condition, "vog", volcano fog.
Though this smoky haze is toxic for those with respiratory problems it creates
the most beautiful sunsets.
