ARTIST INSPIRATION:  For this most popular snorkeling beach in Hawaii I chose the panoramic view from the rim that takes in the whole crater.  The Arts Commissioners specified that people and man made objects not be included.  Just the road going down to the beach is shown on the right.  Notice the hole in the rock on the left.  I often feel the passage through this natural formation is a gateway to the awesome deep waters and stark beauty of the rocks beyond.  Mapping each swimming hole between the coral formations for the painting was a real pleasure as it reminded me of the happy moments swimming with my son, my friends and from my own childhood.  I always like to tell folks who have yet to go to Hanauma Bay, "there are so many pretty fish there it's like swimming in an aquarium"
