ARTIST INSPIRATION: With Alau island offshore, the rock with the hole in
it on the left, Koki Beach has a way of holding back that big deep pacific
expanse beyond. The earth tones of the cliff against the sand in shadow
makes a soft transition to the slowly deepening waters. Iron wood and
Kukui trees shroud this quiet hide away. Plants grow like mad on this wet
fertile coast. When painting sand, the shadows, footprints and flotsam
start to speak a visual language, like calligraphy or petroglyphs. There
is the story of the local man who planted the coconut trees on the little island
in memory of his sons who died in service to this country. After a few
trips down the road to Hana I've concluded that Lindburgh was able to retire
here because he know how to fly in and out of Hana.
