| Artist Inspiration: This view is from the terrace of my favorite hotel. Even as a kid going to school in Kealakekua, having lunch with my family at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel was a real treat. The luscious plantings on this hillside are in striking contrast to the dry lava landscape of this area. The jungle like foreground has spider lilies and night blooming cereus. The mid-ground has bougainvillea, bird of paradise, and coconut palms and these recede all the way to the lush green of the golf course at the other end of the bay. This beach and Hapuna Beach located just around the rocky point are perennially lauded as a couple of the best beaches in the world. The whiteness of the sand, the clarity of the water and gradual but tremendous depth of these waters creates the beautiful colors. The deepest ultramarine blue that modulates to a viridian green hue then to a warm turquoise is the ever changing symphony exhibited in this painting. The cerulean and cobalt of the sky reflecting on the oceans surface, punctuated by the white foam of the gently rolling waves makes for a sublime dance from a time immemorial. Mount Hualalai and Mauna Loa loom out of the horizon. |
